How to Celebrate Without the HR Hangover

Tinsel, team drinks and ‘that one colleague who takes karaoke way too seriously’… the silly season is officially here. But before the bubbles start flowing and the group chat starts filling with questionable photos, here are a few HR reminders that could save you a serious headache come Monday. 

For SMBs where celebrations tend to be more relaxed and a little more informal and leaders wear multiple hats, it’s even more important to set expectations early and ahead of time.

1. Don’t skip a reminder of expected behaviours.

Yes, it’s a party… but it’s not a policy-free zone. A short, friendly note before the prosecco kicks in can go a long way. Remind your team what “good times, respectfully” looks like so no one can claim they didn’t know.

2. Don’t assume “it’s outside work hours so it doesn’t count”

If your business organised it, it’s still considered a work event. That means your duty of care applies before, during and after. Keeping this in mind helps minimise risk and reinforces a culture of safety and respect.

3. Don’t let the drinks flow without limits

Unlimited alcohol and zero leadership is the perfect recipe for a messy Monday. Set up simple boundaries - drink tickets, pacing the service, designated team members keeping an eye out...so the team can enjoy themselves without tipping into chaos.

4. Don’t make attendance feel mandatory

It’s a celebration, not a compulsory activity. Some people love a dance floor; others would rather head home to the kids. Make sure your team feels free to join in their own way (or not at all) without judgment.  How people join (or don’t) is up to them.

Remember fun is encouraged. HR investigations? Not so much.
